What PayByPhone Is Supposed To Do

PayByPhone is a mobile parking payment app used across more than 1,300 locations in the UK, North America, France, Germany, and Switzerland. The pitch is simple: enter or scan a location code, pick how long you need, and pay with a card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or PayPal instead of hunting for coins at a meter. It’s aimed at everyday drivers who park in cities or private lots served by the app, and it includes extras like remote session extensions, a Today View widget, parking history, and emailed receipts for expense tracking.

Where The App Actually Works Well

When it functions as intended, reviewers note the core idea is sound – it’s ‘just a parking app’ that lets you start a session, get notified before it expires, and skip walking back to the meter. Features like pinning your parking spot and reviewing past sessions are useful for people who park in the same areas repeatedly. For users who don’t hit account or payment problems, the convenience of starting and extending sessions from a phone is the main draw.

Payment Failures Are A Recurring Nightmare

The most common and heavily upvoted complaints center on payments simply not going through. One user described trying three different cards plus Google Pay and still getting errors, eventually giving up and paying at the meter directly. Another reported a full year where every card was declined due to a broken backend connection, only resolved after customer service agreed to delete and recreate the account. These aren’t minor glitches – they’re the core function of the app failing.

Account And Registration Frustrations

Beyond payments, registration itself draws criticism. Swapping a phone number reportedly causes major headaches, and the app frequently loses saved account details, forcing users to re-enter information repeatedly. ‘Something went wrong’ errors are mentioned as a frequent occurrence, and receipts are described as unavailable or incomplete even for registered users. A recent update reportedly made things worse, requiring unregistered users to re-enter payment and vehicle info daily.

Design Choices That Annoy Users

Several complaints go beyond bugs and into design decisions. Charging upfront for an estimated duration – rather than metering actual time used like a garage ticket – means users can overpay or struggle to get refunds for early departures. The app’s Wi-Fi scanning permission prompt is also called out as difficult or impossible to decline, even though users say it’s unnecessary since zone codes can be entered manually. In France, a reviewer noted the app forces full account creation with a password rather than offering fast SMS-based sign-in, which feels excessive for someone paying for street parking in a hurry.

Who Should Actually Download This

PayByPhone makes sense if you regularly park in a city where it’s the official or only mobile payment option and you’re willing to tolerate occasional account resets or payment retries. It’s less appealing if you want a fast, frictionless one-off payment, given the recurring reports of declined cards, lost account data, and mandatory registration. Given the scale of complaints about payment reliability specifically, it’s worth testing with a backup payment method – or cash – on hand before relying on it exclusively.

Pros

  • Lets you start sessions remotely
  • Sends alerts before session expires
  • Tracks parking history and receipts
  • Pins your parking location
  • Supports multiple payment methods

Cons

  • Frequent payment failures and declines
  • Accounts lose saved details often
  • Mandatory registration feels excessive

What Real Users Say

Paul Spotts 1/5

“Downloaded the app, but it won't take any form of payment. I tried 3 different credit cards, including Google payments. Took about 10 minutes of fumbling before I just paid by card at the meter. What a world app, when there is always an error adding a payment method. Had a 2nd person try too...same issue. I think the app…”

“Unreliable and problematic. Registration is a pain especially if you need to swap phone number. Frequently seems to lose account details meaning you have to enter details again. Loads of "something went wrong" messages. Receipts not available unless registered and even then often have details missing. literally costing me money for parking costs I can't reclaim. Worst parking app I've…”

“Parking should be charged at the end, when you "clock out" like in the parking garages with tickets. This will also eliminate the possibility of making mistakes when estimating the time or confusing minutes with hours. Or at least you must have a way in your app to cancel the parking! I only used 7min out of 7 hours that…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is PayByPhone?

PayByPhone is a mobile app for paying for parking at meters and lots across cities in the UK, North America, France, Germany, and Switzerland. You enter or scan a location code, choose a parking duration, and pay through the app instead of using coins or a physical meter. It also offers session reminders, parking history, and the ability to extend time remotely.

2

Is PayByPhone free to use?

The app itself is free to download, but you pay for the actual parking session through the app, sometimes with an added convenience fee depending on the location. There's no subscription cost mentioned in the app's own description. Costs are tied to the parking rates set by each city or operator, not by PayByPhone directly.

3

Why does PayByPhone keep declining my card?

Multiple users report persistent payment failures even after trying several different cards or digital wallets like Google Pay. In some cases this has been traced to backend account issues that required deleting and recreating the account entirely through customer support. If you hit repeated errors, contacting support or starting fresh with a new account may help, though there's no guaranteed fix.

4

Can I get a refund if I overestimate my parking time?

Based on user complaints, the app charges upfront for an estimated duration rather than metering actual time like a ticketed garage, and there's no built-in way to cancel or adjust once a session starts. This means if you leave earlier than planned, you may not automatically get money back. Users have specifically asked for an end-of-session charging model instead.

5

Do I have to create an account to use PayByPhone?

Recent versions reportedly push users toward full account registration, with one user in France noting there was no quick SMS-based sign-in option and a password was required just to pay for street parking. Unregistered use has also been described as requiring you to re-enter payment and vehicle details every time after a recent update. This makes one-off, fast payments more cumbersome than before.
