What This Keyboard Add-On Actually Does

GIF Keyboard by Tenor is a Google-owned keyboard extension that sits on top of your existing keyboard app and lets you search millions of GIFs and short videos to drop into texts, Messenger, WhatsApp, and other chat apps. You can search by keyword or emoji, browse trending categories, and add captions to GIFs before sending. It’s built for anyone who communicates mostly in memes and reaction GIFs rather than words, and it works as both a standalone app and a plug-in for other apps like WhatsApp that license Tenor’s search directly.

Where It Still Works Well

When it’s functioning as intended, the core idea holds up: typing a mood or emoji and getting a wall of relevant GIFs is genuinely useful, and one reviewer noted that using Tenor’s search inside WhatsApp’s built-in GIF button worked fine with no lag at all, which suggests the underlying search and content library are solid. The category browsing for reactions and trending topics is also appreciated by users who just want inspiration rather than a specific search term.

The Bugs That Keep Piling Up

The standalone app is where things fall apart for a lot of long-time users. Multiple reviewers report that GIFs now send as a static still image instead of an animated GIF, and the caption feature has reportedly stopped working outright, either freezing on ‘Next’ or stripping the caption entirely before sending. Several people describe a persistent ‘Could not connect to internet’ error that pops up even while every other app on their phone is online, and one user said the app simply stopped opening and kept redirecting to the Play Store for days in a row, despite reinstalling more than once.

Losing Your Saved GIFs Is a Real Risk

Beyond crashes, there’s a data problem: several reviewers describe losing years of saved and favorited GIFs after switching phones or after uninstalling and reinstalling, even while logged into the same account. One user said an update in late March logged them out and wiped their favorites, though support did eventually restore the favorites list, just not the custom GIF packs. If you’ve built up a curated collection over time, that’s not a small annoyance, it’s the whole reason to use the app in the first place.

Performance Complaints Are Consistent Across Reviews

Independent of the caption and sync issues, a recurring theme is that the app has become slow and laggy, with search results sometimes rendering as empty grey boxes, and load times that make people give up and switch to competitors like Giphy. This isn’t one isolated report, it shows up across several of the most-upvoted reviews, which suggests a real regression in app performance rather than a one-off device issue.

Who Should Actually Download This

If you already rely on Tenor’s GIF search through an app like WhatsApp that embeds it directly, you’re probably fine and don’t need the standalone keyboard at all. If you’re considering installing the dedicated GIF Keyboard app itself, go in expecting occasional caption failures, possible loss of saved GIFs on a phone switch or reinstall, and stretches where the app simply won’t connect. It’s still a massive library with real utility when it works, but the reliability issues reported by heavy users are frequent enough that casual GIF senders may be better served by a competitor or by using Tenor search where it’s built into an app you already trust.

Pros

  • Huge searchable library of GIFs and videos
  • Emoji-based search is handy
  • Category browsing helps with inspiration
  • Works smoothly when embedded in WhatsApp
  • Free to download and use

Cons

  • Captions frequently freeze or get stripped
  • Saved GIFs can vanish after reinstall
  • Search often laggy with blank results

What Real Users Say

“The app has become a waste of space. Gifs no longer send as gifs but, instead, just a still image. When you try to add caption, it will 95% of the time present an error message "Could not connect to internet. Please try again later" (nevermind the fact that, 2 minutes before and 2 minutes after, I could be streaming…”

“App suddenly stopped working. I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. I used to be able to open the app and upload/tag gifs as required but now I can't do it. Needed file search function for uploading too, but I gave it a pass. Now I can't do anything so not happy. Also hearing about the loss of the keyboard…”

“Good app but I just got a new phone and was so sad to find that the gifs do not transfer, even if you log into the same account on both devices. Also if you uninstall and reinstall the app, you lose all your saved gifs. I lost years of saved gifs. I've decided transfer my uploaded gifs to Giphy…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is GIF Keyboard by Tenor?

It's a keyboard add-on from Google-owned Tenor that lets you search and send GIFs and short videos directly from your keyboard in texts and chat apps. You can search by keyword, emoji, or browse curated categories like reactions and trending topics. It also powers the built-in GIF search inside other apps such as WhatsApp. It's aimed at users who like to communicate with visual reactions rather than plain text.

2

Is GIF Keyboard by Tenor free?

Yes, the app is free to download and use with no subscription required. Tenor makes its GIF search available for free both as a standalone app and as an integration inside other messaging apps. There are no listed in-app purchases mentioned by users. The main cost is tolerating the bugs and occasional connectivity errors reported in reviews.

3

Why do my GIFs send as a still image instead of animating?

Multiple users report this exact issue, where a GIF that should animate sends as a single static frame instead. This appears to be a bug rather than a setting you can fix on your end, since reviewers say it happens inconsistently. It seems tied to the same connectivity or server issues that also cause caption failures.

4

Will I lose my saved GIFs if I switch phones or reinstall the app?

Based on user reports, yes, this is a real risk. Several reviewers describe losing years of saved and favorited GIFs after uninstalling and reinstalling the app, or after moving to a new device, even while staying logged into the same account. One user did eventually get their favorites restored after contacting support, but custom GIF packs were reportedly not recovered.

5

Is the caption feature reliable?

No, this is one of the most consistently reported problems in recent reviews. Users describe the caption tool freezing when they hit 'Next' or the app proceeding to send the GIF but dropping the caption entirely. This has reportedly been an issue for several months for some users, making it hard to personalize GIFs as the app description advertises.
