What This App Does and Who It’s For

BitTorrent for Android is the mobile companion to the long-running desktop torrent client, letting you search, download, and play torrents and magnet links directly on a phone or tablet. It bundles an integrated music and video player so you can watch or listen to downloaded media without switching apps, plus a Wifi-only mode to keep mobile data usage in check. It’s aimed at people who already understand torrenting and want that workflow on a phone rather than a PC, not newcomers looking for a simple streaming app.

Where It Actually Performs Well

When it works, users describe it as a smooth, intuitive experience that mirrors the desktop version closely. One reviewer with years of use called it ‘just as simple and intuitive to use on android as on pc’ and said the ads, while present, are minimal and skippable within seconds. The built-in player also gets specific praise for its playlist function, letting you queue up multiple downloaded music files and play them back to back without needing a separate music app.

The Ads Problem That Keeps Coming Up

The most repeated complaint by far is intrusive advertising. Multiple reviewers describe full-screen, unskippable ads that interfere with normal use, with one saying the ads have actually caused crashes that forced them to restart downloads mid-process. Several users explicitly state they refuse to upgrade to Pro just to remove the ads, viewing the ad load as a dealbreaker rather than a minor annoyance, which suggests the free tier’s monetization has crossed a line for a meaningful chunk of the user base.

Bugs, Missing Controls, and Update Regressions

Beyond ads, there’s a consistent thread of functional complaints: the app randomly freezing, torrents being re-downloaded without prompting and eating up storage, and a UI that some longtime users feel got ‘gutted’ in recent updates. One reviewer specifically mourned losing the ability to pick which items to seed or restrict, saying newer versions feel simplified for beginners at the expense of power-user controls. Others report accidentally deleting torrents when a confirmation dialog appears and tapping cancel doesn’t actually cancel. There are also complaints about the inability to select individual files within a torrent for some users, no option to change the download save location, and download speeds that lag noticeably behind the PC client.

Who Should Actually Download This

If you’re already comfortable with torrenting and mainly want basic download-and-play functionality on your phone, this app can do the job, and the built-in playlist-capable media player is a genuine convenience. But go in with realistic expectations: the ad experience is aggressive enough that it’s driven long-time fans to look for alternatives, and recent updates have reportedly stripped out granular controls that power users relied on. Casual users wanting occasional downloads may tolerate it fine; those who need fine-grained control over seeding, file selection, and storage locations may find themselves frustrated within the first few sessions.

Pros

  • Smooth, intuitive interface similar to desktop
  • Built-in music player supports playlists
  • No download speed or size limits
  • Wifi-only mode saves mobile data
  • Handles magnet links and torrents directly

Cons

  • Intrusive, sometimes unskippable full-screen ads
  • Random freezing and accidental file deletions
  • Recent updates removed seeding and file controls

What Real Users Say

A Google user 1/5

“I understand an app needing to have ads to support itself and the staff who develops it. However, BitTorrent introduced ads that are extremely intrusive and interfere with my use of the app. No, I will not reward you by getting the "pro" version to get rid of ads. I will be finding an alternative with less intrusive ads and…”

“Every time there's an update this app gets worse. Intrusive ads make it unusable now. When scrolling down through torrents it occasionally asks if you want to delete one, you hit cancel and it deletes it anyway. I'm back here looking for another update because it wouldn't download at all. Restarted phone and now downloads are stuck at under 1…”

Raymond Taylor 5/5

“Excellent, smooth running torrent app. The player included has a playlist function too. While you don't need another app to listen, the ability to use an equalizer app would be nice. I tried several music player apps, but they failed to recognize the contents of the files, unknown why. While this app has an appearance very much like uTorrent, it…”

What is BitTorrent®- Torrent Downloads?

It's the official Android app from Rainberry, Inc. that lets you search for, download, and play torrents and magnet links on a phone or tablet. It includes an integrated media player for music and video playback, along with a Wifi-only mode to limit mobile data use. It's essentially a mobile version of the well-known BitTorrent desktop client.

2

Is BitTorrent for Android free to use?

Yes, the core app is free and has no download speed or size limits, but it's supported by ads. A Pro version exists that removes ads and adds features like auto-shutdown, though several reviewers note they refuse to upgrade due to how intrusive the free ads have become.

3

Does the app have a lot of ads?

This is the most common complaint in user reviews, with multiple people describing full-screen, unskippable ads that interrupt usage and in some cases cause crashes. Some longtime users say the ads are tolerable and brief, but many others consider them a dealbreaker.

4

Can I choose which files to download from a torrent?

The app is designed to let you select individual files within a torrent to save storage space, but some users report this control has been removed or is inconsistent in recent versions. If file-level selection is critical for you, test this feature carefully after installing.

5

Is the Android app as good as the PC version?

Reviews are mixed on this. Some users say it's just as simple and intuitive as the desktop client, while others say it has 'a long way to go' to match the PC version, citing slower download speeds, a weaker UI, and bugs like random freezing or unwanted re-downloads.
