What Agoda Actually Offers Travelers

Agoda is a booking app for flights, hotels, BnBs, and vacation rentals, pitched as an all-in-one holiday planner with over 4,000,000 accommodations and flights from 200-plus airlines. It’s aimed at budget-conscious travelers who want to compare prices, read reviews, and book a trip without juggling multiple apps or websites. The pitch is straightforward: cheap deals, a big inventory, and tools to manage your itinerary once you’ve paid. In practice, the app delivers on the search and browsing side but runs into serious trouble once money changes hands.

Where the App Genuinely Performs Well

Browsing is where Agoda shines. The filters, map views, high-res photos, and the sheer volume of listings make it easy to compare hotels side by side, and having over 35 million traveler reviews baked in gives you a reasonable sense of what you’re booking before you commit. For users who just want to shop around for flight and hotel prices across a wide net of options, the search experience itself is fast and the interface doesn’t feel cluttered despite how much inventory it’s pulling from.

The Pay-Later Currency Problem Users Keep Reporting

The most cited complaint, appearing in one of the highest-useful-vote reviews, is about the ‘pay later’ option: Agoda reportedly applies its own currency conversion rate at the time of payment rather than the standard exchange rate, and that rate can be significantly higher than expected, inflating the final charge. This isn’t a minor gripe — it’s the single most upvoted issue in user feedback, and it means the price you see when booking may not be the price you’re actually charged weeks later. Anyone using pay-later should screenshot the original price and rate and double-check the final charge against their card statement.

Discount Codes and Promised Offers That Don’t Materialize

Multiple reviewers describe being lured in by a first-booking discount, often cited as 10% or 25% off, that simply never applied at checkout despite following the stated steps, including registering after purchase as instructed. One user rebooked hoping to fix the issue, only to find prices had risen and the coupon still wouldn’t apply. This pattern — advertised discount, no discount at checkout, no support resolution — shows up often enough across reviews that it looks like a structural issue with how promotions are handled, not a one-off glitch.

Booking Mix-Ups and Support That’s Hard to Reach in a Crisis

Beyond pricing, users report the app assigning a different room than what was booked, booking IDs that don’t show up at check-in, and confusing room-selection options that reviewers describe as tricky rather than clear. One reviewer noted Agoda doesn’t let hotels email you directly the way other booking platforms do, which becomes a real problem if a hotel needs to send a check-in code — you could end up stranded outside with no way to get it. Support responsiveness is another recurring weak point: one user described a hotel having power outages and being unable to reach Agoda support during the emergency, and even after getting refund authorization from the hotel, Agoda couldn’t process it because it couldn’t get the hotel on the phone. A long-time user who’d booked dozens of trips across Asia said they were done with the app after it sent the wrong booking package to a hotel and failed to refund a flight canceled by the airline.

Who Should Actually Download This

Agoda is worth having on your phone for research and price comparison — the browsing experience, filters, and review volume genuinely help you shortlist options fast. But given the recurring complaints about pay-later currency conversion, discounts that don’t apply, wrong-room bookings, and support that’s hard to reach when something actually goes wrong, this isn’t the app to trust blindly for a trip where things need to go smoothly. Pay upfront in your own currency where possible, keep a screenshot of every price and offer shown to you, and have a backup way to contact the hotel directly. If you’re comfortable double-checking every charge and don’t mind being your own safety net, it can save you money; if you need a booking app you can trust to just work, weigh these complaints carefully first.

  • Huge inventory of hotels and flights
  • Useful filters, maps, and photos
  • 35 million traveler reviews available
  • Fast, uncluttered search experience

Cons

  • Pay-later currency conversion inflates charges
  • Advertised discounts often don't apply
  • Support hard to reach during problems

What Real Users Say

Flora 1/5

“Be careful with hidden charges, especially when choosing pay later. When you choose to pay later, Agoda often applies its own currency conversion rate at the time of payment. This rate is usually much higher than the standard exchange rate, meaning the final amount charged to your card can be significantly more than the price originally quoted at booking. Juding…”

“Your are a bunch of fraudsters. How can this app have 4.3* with so many bad reviews? I downloaded the app to get a 10% discount on a favourable rate, so I didn't look at the reviews before downloading. Everything they have said is false, I didn't get the 10% discount despite clicking on the get the 10% off after…”

“This app/service is a scam. I booked a room and the booking changed and gave me a totally different room than what I ordered. the booking ID they sent me didn't show up when I tried to check-in. all of the options for choosing the room are confusing and tricks you. I would recommend any other booking app than Agoda.…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is Agoda: Cheap Flights & Hotels?

Agoda is a travel booking app that lets users search and book flights, hotels, BnBs, and vacation rentals from a global inventory of over 4,000,000 accommodations and 200-plus airlines. It includes filters, photos, map views, and millions of traveler reviews to help with decision-making. The app also lets users manage bookings, store vouchers, and access 24/7 live agent support in multiple languages. It's designed to be a one-stop planner for budget travel.

2

Is Agoda free to use?

Yes, downloading and using the Agoda app is free; you only pay for the flights, hotels, or accommodations you actually book. However, several user reviews warn that the final charged amount can differ from what's displayed, particularly with the pay-later option where currency conversion rates may be applied at checkout. It's worth confirming the exact price and currency before confirming any pay-later booking.

3

Does Agoda actually honor its discount codes and first-booking offers?

User reviews raise consistent concerns here. Several reviewers report following the exact steps for advertised 10% or 25% first-booking discounts and receiving nothing at checkout, even after registering as instructed. Some tried rebooking to fix the issue, only to find prices had increased with the discount still not applying. Given how often this complaint comes up, don't rely on a promised discount actually reducing your total until you see it reflected in the checkout price.

4

What happens if something goes wrong with my hotel booking on Agoda?

Based on user experiences, this can be a weak point. Reviewers report receiving different rooms than booked, booking IDs that don't register at check-in, and difficulty reaching support during active issues like hotel power outages. One user noted Agoda doesn't allow hotels to email guests directly, which can be a problem if the hotel needs to send a check-in code. If you book through Agoda, it's wise to also get the hotel's direct contact information as a backup.

5

Who is Agoda best suited for?

Agoda works well for travelers who want to compare a wide range of flight and hotel options quickly and are comfortable double-checking prices, discounts, and charges themselves. It's less suited for travelers who want a hands-off, fully reliable booking experience, given the recurring complaints about currency conversion charges, unapplied discounts, and slow support during booking problems. If you use it, verify every price and offer before and after payment.
