What This App Is Supposed to Do
Qatar Airways’ app is the mobile companion for the airline’s Privilege Club loyalty program and general trip management, covering booking, check-in, digital boarding passes, seat selection, flight status updates, and add-ons like extra baggage or e-SIMs. It also pitches newer features like Sama, an AI chat assistant for bookings and in-flight menu customization, plus Starlink Wi-Fi access on select routes. In theory it’s built for both loyalty members chasing Avios and one-off travelers who just want to manage a booking. In practice, the reviews suggest it struggles to deliver on even the basics.
Login and Account Problems That Won’t Go Away
The single biggest complaint across reviews is that people simply can’t log in. Multiple users describe the one-time-passcode system failing repeatedly, with the app never delivering the code to email or phone, blocking access to their own bookings entirely. One reviewer says this went on for months despite having flown several Qatar flights with credit sitting unused in their account. When login does work, some report the app freezing at the notifications pop-up, effectively locking them out again.
Bookings That Vanish and Data That Won’t Save
Even past the login wall, the app doesn’t reliably manage trips. Reviewers describe adding a booking reference, seeing it confirmed, and then having it disappear minutes later, forcing them to re-add it repeatedly. Others say the app shows all the right fields for things like wheelchair requests or a child’s meal preference, but changes simply don’t save. Frequent flyer numbers and Known Traveler Numbers reportedly throw errors on submission, and one user couldn’t even link their profile to their own trip, which should be a basic function of any airline app.
Payments and Refunds Add Extra Stress
Money issues compound the frustration. One traveler was charged twice for a seat upgrade they booked through the app, with the ticket never reflecting the change, and says they spent hours on the phone trying to sort it out beforehand. Another describes a year-long refund ordeal involving an expired card, unanswered emails, three calls requiring them to repeat the whole story each time, and a $250 penalty taken from their own refund. These aren’t minor UI gripes, they’re the kind of failures that cost real money and time.
Smaller Annoyances Worth Knowing About
Beyond the major issues, there are usability complaints too. One reviewer flagged that the live chat’s text input is blocked by the Android navigation bar in portrait mode, forcing a switch to landscape just to type a message. Another noted there’s no way to enter passport details in-app at all, requiring a call to the airline instead. Several reviewers say the airline’s website simply works better than the app for tasks the app claims to support.
Who Should Actually Download This
If you’re a Qatar Airways flyer who just wants to check flight status or download a boarding pass on a good day, the app can technically do it. But based on widespread and detailed complaints about login failures, disappearing bookings, unsaved special requests, and double charges, it’s hard to recommend relying on this app for anything time-sensitive. Frequent flyers chasing Avios or needing to manage complex bookings may be better off using the website as backup, or at minimum, screenshotting confirmations before the app has a chance to lose them.
