What This App Is and Who It’s For

Amazon Music: Songs & Podcasts is Amazon’s streaming service, bundled free (with ads) for anyone, ad-free for Prime members, and fully on-demand with Unlimited subscribers who pay for access to the full 100 million song catalog plus audiobooks and offline listening. It’s built for people already inside the Amazon ecosystem, especially Echo and Prime households, who want one app to handle music, podcasts, and their purchased MP3s or AutoRip albums. If you’re not a Prime member already, the value proposition is much less compelling.

Where It Actually Performs Well

For Prime members, getting a large catalog of ad-free music and podcasts at no extra cost is a genuinely strong deal, and reviewers do note the music selection itself is good. The integration with Echo devices, car systems, and Wear OS smartwatches also makes it convenient for people who want to control playback from their wrist or dashboard without opening a separate app. Importing playlists from other platforms is a nice touch for anyone switching from a competitor.

Shuffle and Playback Problems That Keep Coming Up

The most repeated complaint across reviews is that shuffle mode simply doesn’t shuffle. One user with over 400 songs in a single playlist said they’d never heard half of them because the app keeps replaying the same small rotation of tracks. Another described the app repeatedly playing songs they’d already thumbs-downed, even after creating entirely new stations with different artists. This isn’t a minor annoyance for a music app — shuffle and station variety are core functions, and multiple reviewers say this behavior worsened after updates.

Navigation, Crashes, and Playing Specific Songs

Several reviewers describe the navigation as inconsistent, with different screens behaving in different ways and buttons not doing what’s expected. One specific and recurring frustration: users can’t always play a single purchased or downloaded track directly — instead they have to start the whole album and skip forward manually. Others report the app stopping mid-playback while connected to a car radio, songs freezing with a ‘restarting station’ message, and glitchy behavior when trying to add tracks to playlists, sometimes requiring multiple attempts.

The Free Tier Feels Noticeably Limited

Once a free trial period ends, several users say the app’s quality drops sharply — playback becomes unreliable, and functionality that worked during the trial period stops working smoothly. Free-tier users also report being restricted to shuffling entire albums rather than picking individual songs, and being pushed toward podcast content when they only want music. Combined with reports that the app isn’t very ‘eye appealing’ and that lyrics are occasionally wrong, the overall experience feels rougher than what competitors offer at a similar price point.

Verdict: Who Should Actually Download This

If you’re a Prime member who already pays for the subscription and mainly wants convenient, ad-free background music integrated with Echo or Wear OS devices, this app is a reasonable no-extra-cost bonus. But if you’re expecting reliable shuffle, smooth navigation, and consistent playback control — especially without paying for Unlimited — the recurring complaints about repeated songs, crashes, and clunky UI suggest you’ll likely be frustrated. Users coming from Spotify or similar apps should expect a real adjustment period, and possibly some lasting annoyances that updates haven’t fully fixed.

What Real Users Say

Jennifer Beeber ★ 2/5

“I have Amazon Music Unlimited and it does not shuffle the songs. I have over 400 songs on just one playlist, and have never heard half of them. I use the app a lot, on my echo, phone, and in the car. I always use shuffle mode, but it doesn't work, it plays the same group of songs over and…”

Imogen Leonard ★ 1/5

“There are probably worse music apps out there but this is the worst I've ever had to use. Navigation is awful, every screen interacts differently, sometimes it won't let you play a SPECIFIC song you have purchased and downloaded - I have to start the whole album at a different track and skip forward until it gets to the one…”

Megan McMann ★ 3/5

“This app is really great if you have the Premium subscription but then once my free trial of that ran out, the quality of the app decreased dramatically. Like, technically - it doesn't even work right. It will play two songs and then just stop and say "restarting station" and then I have to close out of the app entirely…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is Amazon Music: Songs & Podcasts?

It's Amazon's streaming app for music, podcasts, and audiobooks, developed by Amazon Mobile LLC. It offers free ad-supported listening, ad-free access for Prime members, and full on-demand streaming through the paid Amazon Music Unlimited tier. The app also lets users access previously purchased MP3s and AutoRip albums stored in their Amazon account.

2

Is Amazon Music free to use?

Yes, there's a free tier with ads and no credit card required, offering stations and playlists. Prime members get ad-free access to all music and top podcasts at no extra cost. Full on-demand access to the entire 100 million song catalog, offline listening, and audiobooks requires a separate Amazon Music Unlimited subscription.

3

Does shuffle mode actually work well in Amazon Music?

Based on user feedback, this is one of the app's biggest weaknesses. Multiple reviewers report that shuffle repeats a small set of songs instead of playing their full library, even with hundreds of tracks in a playlist. Some also note the app keeps replaying previously disliked songs regardless of new stations created.

4

Can I play a specific downloaded song directly?

Some users report difficulty doing this, saying the app sometimes forces you to start playing an entire album rather than the individual track you want. You then have to manually skip forward to reach the specific song. This has been cited as a recurring navigation annoyance.

5

Is Amazon Music Unlimited worth paying for?

If you want full on-demand control, offline downloads, audiobooks, and unlimited skips, Unlimited adds real functionality beyond the free and Prime tiers. However, some reviewers say app performance and reliability, including crashes and glitchy playlist management, remain issues even as a paying subscriber. It's worth weighing the catalog size against these reported stability problems.
