What Zomato Actually Does
Zomato is a food delivery and restaurant discovery app that dominates the Indian market (with a UAE presence too), letting you order from local and international chains like McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC and Domino’s, or browse restaurants for dining out with table bookings and bill payments. It also dabbles in live events through Zomato Live. With over 1.5 million listed restaurants and delivery across 1000+ cities, it’s aimed squarely at anyone in India who wants food on their doorstep or is deciding where to eat out, plus dining deal-seekers chasing cashback.
Where It Genuinely Delivers
When the system works, users describe a smooth experience: browsing menus, applying filters for budget or vegetarian options, and tracking orders live from payment to doorstep. The sheer restaurant selection and the ability to search by cuisine, dish, or dietary need (like the ‘Healthy’ filter) is a real convenience that’s hard to match. Dining-out features like table booking and bill-pay cashback also get credit from users who use Zomato mainly for restaurant visits rather than delivery.
Delivery Delays and Missing Items
The most common complaints center on delivery reliability. One reviewer waited from 6:00 PM to 8:20 PM for an order that became useless by the time it arrived. Another watched their delivery partner’s live tracker show the rider heading to a completely different location, only for support to offer little beyond an apology. A separate user reported having a delivery partner assigned from 20 km away, meaning food sat ready while the rider was still far off, with no clean way to cancel without being charged full price.
Support That Frustrates More Than It Helps
Multiple reviews single out customer support as a weak point, specifically the reliance on an AI chatbot that doesn’t escalate issues properly, even when users explicitly state their problem isn’t understood. When combo meals arrived with missing items, refunds were sometimes rejected outright or limited to a small credit, like ₹40, that didn’t cover the actual missing item’s value and expired quickly. This pattern, order goes wrong, support offers little recourse, shows up repeatedly across low-rated reviews.
Coupon Glitches and Distance Discrepancies
Beyond delivery timing, users flagged a checkout bug where applying a coupon does nothing despite the coupon being visible and eligible. Another complaint involved the free delivery membership’s 7 km radius: one user found the app showing a restaurant as 7.7 km away on one phone but 5.5 km on another, effectively pushing them past the free-delivery threshold. Whether this is a bug or inconsistent GPS handling, it reads as exactly the kind of discrepancy that erodes trust in a membership perk.
Who Should Actually Download This
If you live in a covered Indian city and want the widest possible restaurant selection with reasonably reliable dining-out tools like table booking, Zomato remains a practical default. But if you’ve been burned by missing items, bad refunds, or unresponsive AI support before, know that these aren’t isolated complaints, they’re recurring themes among reviewers. Order during off-peak hours if possible, and don’t expect quick human help when something goes wrong.
