What This App Actually Does

The Roku App is a free companion app that turns your phone into a remote control, keyboard, and casting hub for any Roku device or Roku TV. It lets you search for shows by voice or text, launch channels, cast personal photos and videos to the big screen, and stream through The Roku Channel directly on your phone. It’s built for anyone who already owns Roku hardware and wants a backup remote or an easier way to type in passwords and search terms than clicking through an on-screen keyboard with a physical clicker.

Where It Genuinely Delivers

The core remote function is the app’s biggest selling point, and users consistently point to it as a lifesaver when the physical remote goes missing. One reviewer with 1337 helpful votes noted the app went from barely functional to working consistently, calling it a household essential simply because physical remotes get lost so easily. Another reviewer with 566 votes praised having every streaming app in one place with no downtime and easy customization, plus the peace of mind that comes from always having a backup remote available on a phone that’s rarely far from reach.

The Bugs That Keep Showing Up

Device discovery is a recurring pain point. One user described a 20-30 minute ordeal of restarting the phone, restarting the TV, and unplugging the router just to get the app to find the device on the network, since manual IP entry didn’t work either. Others report the app simply stops working after a few days of normal use, requiring a full uninstall and reinstall to function again, a cycle one reviewer said repeats about twice a week despite calling this otherwise the best Roku remote app available.

Streaming and Playback Frustrations

Beyond connectivity, playback itself has problems for some users. A reviewer with 198 helpful votes described shows restarting from the beginning after a commercial break, even when trying to fast-forward back to the original spot, making mobile viewing unreliable for anything longer than a quick clip. Another complaint centered on channel shortcuts breaking down entirely, where tapping Netflix would open the app but fail to let the user select a profile or actually start streaming, no matter how many times the app or phone was restarted.

Interface Changes Users Aren’t Thrilled About

A smaller but notable complaint involves a redesigned remote layout. One user missed the traditional directional arrows, saying they were replaced by a large purple center block that changed how navigation feels, a change they clearly found worse than the previous layout. Headphone streaming also has a workaround-only fix, since there’s no direct Bluetooth option from the TV itself, forcing audio through the phone app instead, which one user found interrupted by unrelated processes at times.

Who Should Actually Download This

If you own a Roku device and just need a solid backup remote with voice search and easy text entry, this app covers the basics well and is free to use. Just go in expecting occasional connectivity headaches, the possibility of needing to reinstall the app periodically, and some inconsistency with playback resuming correctly on mobile. It’s a genuinely useful companion app, not a flawless one, and is best suited for existing Roku owners rather than anyone without the hardware already in their living room.

Pros

  • Free backup remote for lost controllers
  • Voice and keyboard search work well
  • Casts personal photos and videos easily
  • Consolidates streaming channels in one app
  • Handy for private headphone listening

Cons

  • Frequent device discovery connection issues
  • Playback sometimes restarts from beginning
  • Requires periodic reinstalls to keep working

What Real Users Say

Manda B 5/5

“Changing my review to say the app works much better now. Went from not working at all to working consistently. only took them a long while lol. Im very thankful for it (when it's working properly) because evidently my household can keep track of a single remote. I can't even find the remote I just bought. It's still in the…”

Jenn R 5/5

“Great streaming service. All the streaming apps conveniently located on one device but you could easily access from anywhere with a Roku account. If you ever lose remote, the app has you covered! Never had any down time either. Definitely easy to use and you can customize it. Live TV is an option too. Recommended!!!”

“useless at worst, unoptimal at best. I tried connecting to my TV and it didn't show up. Then Itried to do it manually by IP address—nothing. It took 20-30 minutes of restarting my phone and my TV, unpliggimg my router, reconnecting everything, then searching for devices again. eventually it worked for a while, but had a couple seconds of latency…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is The Roku App (Official)?

It's a free companion app from Roku that turns your phone or tablet into a remote control for Roku devices and Roku TVs. It supports voice and keyboard search, channel launching, casting personal media to the TV, and streaming through The Roku Channel. It requires your phone to be on the same wireless network as your Roku device for most features.

2

Is The Roku App free to use?

Yes, the app itself is completely free to download and use. Some individual channels accessible through it may require separate payment or subscriptions, and this varies by country. The Roku Channel content within the app is free but only viewable in the US.

3

Why won't the Roku app find my device?

Device discovery issues are a common complaint, with some users reporting it takes multiple restarts of both the phone and the Roku device to establish a connection. Manual IP address entry doesn't always resolve this either. Ensuring both devices are on the same wireless network and restarting your router can sometimes help.

4

Does the Roku app work well for streaming video directly on my phone?

It works but isn't fully reliable, according to user reports. Some users experience shows restarting from the beginning after commercial breaks, even when trying to fast-forward back to where they left off. This appears to be an inconsistent bug rather than a universal problem.

5

Can I listen with headphones through the Roku app?

Yes, private listening through headphones is a built-in feature, but it only works by routing audio through the phone app since there's no direct Bluetooth option from the TV itself. Some users have noted this can be interrupted if other phone notifications or calls come through during playback.
