What This App Actually Does

eBay’s mobile app is the pocket version of the world’s biggest online garage sale, built for both buyers hunting deals and sellers clearing out a closet or running a side business. It covers everything from vintage fashion and sneakers to auto parts and trading cards, with features like AI-generated listing descriptions, a photo search tool, My Garage for car parts, and eBay Live for real-time auctions. If you’ve used eBay on desktop, the app is meant to replicate that experience with push notifications for deals, bids, and order updates layered on top.

Buying Feels Smooth and Reliable

The consistent theme in user feedback is that buying on eBay is simple and low-stress. One reviewer summed it up plainly: ‘buying items on the app is simple and easy.’ The Money Back Guarantee and Authenticity Guarantee for sneakers, watches, handbags, and trading cards add real confidence, especially for higher-value purchases. Push notifications for Daily Deals and order updates work as advertised, and browsing by category or condition makes it easy to filter down to pre-loved or refurbished items.

Selling Is Where the Frustration Piles Up

Sellers are far less happy. Multiple reviewers describe a seller-unfriendly system where buyers seem to hold all the leverage, including the ability to leave negative feedback even on canceled orders. One seller reported being refunded a buyer’s money without ever getting the returned item back, then being told they owed eBay for the refund anyway, with six months of unresolved phone calls. Another described losing more than half the value of a valuable item after fees and shipping, calling the ‘yard sale eBay’ era dead and blaming a flood of low-cost overseas competition.

The Redesigned Seller Interface Has Real Bugs

Several reviewers specifically call out the newer seller interface as a step backward. What used to be a single-page listing flow was split into four or five separate pages, and one user noted that months after the update, formatting issues still hadn’t been fully fixed. Others complain that shipping options can’t be selected in multiple, descriptions sometimes get lost mid-listing, and the app pushes hard for paid promotion before letting you simply post an item. The AI-generated description feature, marketed as a convenience, is described by at least one seller as unwanted and unhelpful for both sellers and buyers.

Notifications Don’t Always Match Reality

Ironically, for an app built around real-time alerts, sellers report missing the moment that actually matters: the sale itself. One user said they didn’t find out an item sold until a late shipping notice arrived weeks afterward. There are also reports of items auto-relisting without consent and server errors when trying to add payment information, which undercuts the app’s promise of a frictionless selling process.

Who Should Actually Download This

If you’re primarily a buyer looking for deals, deep category browsing, and secondhand or authenticated items, this app delivers on its core promise and is worth having on your phone. If you’re a serious or high-volume seller, be prepared for a clunkier, bug-prone listing experience, unpredictable fee structures, and a support process that multiple users describe as slow to resolve real disputes. Casual sellers offloading a few items occasionally will likely tolerate it; anyone running a small resale business should go in with realistic expectations about friction.

Pros

  • Simple, reliable buying experience overall
  • Authenticity Guarantee builds buyer confidence
  • Money Back Guarantee reduces purchase risk
  • Good category and condition filtering options
  • Real-time deal and auction notifications

Cons

  • Seller interface redesign is buggy and clunky
  • Dispute resolution can drag on for months
  • Notifications often lag behind actual sales

What Real Users Say

Chris 1/5

“eBay is one of the worst platforms for sellers. Buyers apparently have all the power. You can prove they're lying via messages, and then they can lower your rating without even receiving a product. Why are buyers allowed to rate a product when it's been canceled for legitimate reasons. They will not back you as a seller. It's great if…”

“Great to buy on, horrible to sell on. I sold an item on here which was refunded to the buyer, but I never got my item back. Ebay said I owed them money for the refund, on top of me never getting my item back! It wasn't something cheap either. 6 months of constant phone calls later... Still stuck. And…”

“Please let me report scalpers because these scalpers are REALLY getting out of hand!! I reported an item for manipulating search results, listing with the wrong item condition (i.e listed as "pre-owned" but the title and desc. say "for Parts&Repair") got an email saying the AI didn't find anything despite that the item name in the same email said "PARTS…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is eBay online shopping & selling?

It's the official eBay mobile app for buying and selling items across categories like fashion, tech, auto parts, and trading cards. It includes features like AI-assisted listing creation, photo search, eBay Live auctions, and My Garage for finding car parts. The app also supports the Authenticity Guarantee and Money Back Guarantee programs for eligible items.

2

Is the eBay app free to use?

Yes, downloading and using the app to browse and buy is free. Selling involves listing and final value fees that vary by category, and users report these costs, combined with shipping, can significantly cut into profits. There's no charge simply to create an account and shop.

3

Is eBay better for buying or selling?

Based on user feedback, buying is consistently described as simple and easy, while selling comes with more friction. Sellers report issues like a clunky redesigned interface, lost descriptions, and disputes that take months to resolve. If you're mainly shopping, the experience is smoother than if you're listing items regularly.

4

Does eBay's Authenticity Guarantee actually help buyers?

Yes, it's highlighted as a strength, covering eligible sneakers, watches, handbags, and trading cards with expert verification before delivery. This adds a layer of trust for higher-value purchases where counterfeits are a concern. It's one of the more consistently praised features in real user feedback.

5

What are the biggest complaints from eBay sellers?

Sellers frequently mention a redesigned listing interface that split a simple one-page flow into multiple confusing pages, along with bugs and lost item descriptions. There are also complaints about refunds where the seller never received their returned item back, unwanted push toward paid promotion, and notifications that arrive too late to be useful. Scalper and listing manipulation reports also frustrate some users who feel the platform doesn't act on them.
