What This App Is Built To Do

Best Buy’s app is the mobile front door to its entire catalog: laptops, TVs, appliances, gaming gear, and now a growing Marketplace of third-party sellers offering everything from Fanatics sports memorabilia to office furniture and musical instruments. It’s aimed at anyone who shops Best Buy regularly, whether that’s for a big-ticket appliance, a curbside pickup errand, or tracking a repair through the Geek Squad. The feature list is broad on paper: Price Match Guarantee, AR previews for furniture and appliances, real-time order tracking, and exclusive deals for My Best Buy Plus or Total members.

Where It Actually Delivers

When the core functions work, they work well. Curbside pickup notifications and order tracking are genuinely convenient for people who don’t want to wander a store floor, and the ability to check local store stock before driving over saves real time. The AR feature for visualizing appliances or furniture in your space is a nice touch that a lot of shopping apps don’t bother to include. For members with My Best Buy Plus or Total, the promise of exclusive deal access adds a reason to keep the app installed rather than just browsing the website.

The Performance Problems Users Keep Hitting

The recurring complaint across reviews is speed, and it’s not a minor gripe. Multiple users describe load times of anywhere from a few seconds to over 20 seconds just to search, scroll, or click a product link, and this reportedly persists even after clearing cache or reinstalling. One reviewer called it the ‘slowest most irritating app’ they’ve used, specifically citing filter menus that lag for 5-6 seconds between selections. Others report the app freezing outright, refusing to load pages like repair status or product details, and randomly signing users out, forcing a repeat login.

The Marketplace Update Backlash

Several reviews point to the Marketplace rollout as a turning point where performance got noticeably worse, with more pop-ups pushing add-ons and upsells on nearly every page. Account-linked features take a hit too: saved lists, price alerts, and Best Buy credit card details are described as frequently unavailable, with card links sometimes redirecting to a bank site that doesn’t load properly. The ‘Drops’ queue system for limited releases also draws sharp criticism, with users saying items go from ‘Coming Soon’ to ‘Sold Out’ almost instantly and suspecting bot manipulation, having ‘never successfully pre-ordered anything’ through it.

Final Verdict on Downloading It

This app is functional enough for basic browsing, curbside pickup logistics, and checking store inventory, but it’s not built for anyone who wants a fast, frictionless checkout experience right now. If you’re patient, mainly use it for pickup notifications or price-matching research, it’ll get the job done. If you’re chasing limited drops, relying on saved price alerts, or just want snappy page loads while comparing products, the persistent slowness and account-feature outages reported by users are likely to frustrate you. Casual, occasional shoppers may find it tolerable; frequent power users may want to stick to the desktop site instead.

Pros

  • Convenient curbside pickup notifications
  • AR preview for appliances and furniture
  • Real-time order and delivery tracking
  • Local store stock checking
  • Exclusive deals for Plus/Total members

Cons

  • Frequent slow load times and freezing
  • Random sign-outs requiring re-login
  • Unreliable Drops queue for limited items

What Real Users Say

Michael C 1/5

“Absolutely terrible. Freezes randomly or just flat refuses to load pages like when I click on a product or go to check my repair status. Sometimes it just decides to sign out randomly, then you have to go through the annoying sign in process - which is ridiculous.... It gives you the option to use text code, password, or email…”

“Terrible queue system that can easily be manipulated by bots...I've never successfully pre-ordered anything with the Drops through the app. "Coming Soon" turns to "In Line" to "Sold Out". Hot items like TCG products for the family to a standing mixer for my wife to a monitor for myself, it doesn't matter...everything is instantly sold out after the Pre-Order option…”

“The app got horrible. Even when they updated, the app still runs super slow. Can't even look through techs and stuff without it taking forever to load. If they are going to add third parties, they should have been ready and make the app run smoothly. It just takes forever to load anything, and buying online, my cart will act…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is Best Buy: Shop tech deals?

It's the official mobile shopping app from Best Buy, letting users browse and buy electronics, appliances, and other tech, plus items from third-party Marketplace sellers. It supports curbside pickup, order tracking, AR product previews, and Price Match Guarantee shopping. It's designed for both quick errands like curbside pickup and full online shopping trips.

2

Is the Best Buy app free to use?

Yes, the app itself is free to download and use. Some features, like exclusive deals, require a paid My Best Buy Plus or My Best Buy Total membership. Basic shopping, order tracking, and store browsing don't require any subscription.

3

Does the Best Buy app run slowly?

Multiple user reviews report significant lag, with load times ranging from a few seconds to over 20 seconds for basic actions like searching or filtering. Some users say clearing cache or reinstalling didn't fix the issue. This appears to have worsened after the Marketplace feature update, according to several reviews.

4

Can I trust the Drops feature for limited-item releases?

Based on user feedback, the Drops queue system has drawn criticism for moving from 'Coming Soon' to 'Sold Out' very quickly, with some users suspecting bot activity. Reviewers report never successfully securing a limited item through it, including electronics and trading cards. If you're after limited-run products, temper your expectations.

5

Are account features like saved lists and price alerts reliable?

Several user reviews report that saved lists, price alerts, and Best Buy credit card account details are frequently unavailable or fail to load. Some also mention broken links when trying to access credit card information, which redirect to a bank site that doesn't function properly. These issues appear to be inconsistent but are reported often enough to be a real concern.
