What This App Actually Offers

Etsy: A Special Marketplace is the mobile storefront for the millions of independent sellers who list handmade goods, vintage finds, custom jewelry, art, and craft supplies on Etsy’s platform. It’s aimed at shoppers who want something other than mass-produced big-box items: gift-givers, home decorators, and anyone hunting for a one-of-a-kind piece. With over 74 million installs and more than 2.1 million ratings, it’s clearly a mainstream shopping habit for a lot of people, not a niche curiosity.

Where the App Genuinely Delivers

Users consistently praise the sheer selection and the ability to personalize items, from custom dining tables to handmade jewelry. One reviewer called it easy to use, efficient, and noted it never locks up or crashes, which matters a lot for a shopping app people open daily. The gifting tools, saved collections, and order tracking with seller chat are appreciated by buyers who use Etsy specifically for birthdays, weddings, and holiday shopping. When the app works as intended, browsing curated collections and chatting directly with small shop owners feels genuinely different from shopping on Amazon.

Search and Organization Problems That Keep Coming Up

The most upvoted complaints center on search and organization. One heavily-endorsed review points out that Etsy removed a feature that showed recent items from followed shops in one place, making it harder to keep track of favorite sellers. Another frequent frustration is the inability to exclude specific materials from search results—someone with skin sensitivities noted that sterling silver keeps appearing no matter how the filters are set. A separate reviewer echoed this, saying filters are too general and convoluted, surfacing irrelevant results even after specifying details like natural versus lab-created diamonds. App updates are also a sore point: one user described saved folders getting rearranged and items disappearing from sorted collections after an update, calling it a recurring problem every time the app changes.

Shipping Costs and Order Reliability Concerns

Shipping costs draw real frustration—one reviewer described paying over $4 in shipping for a simple sticker, more than the item itself cost, and said the expense limits how much they’re willing to buy. More seriously, one buyer reported that out of 9 orders, only 1 arrived on time and undamaged, with several orders never arriving and not being refunded. This kind of experience varies heavily by seller since Etsy is a marketplace of independent shops, but it’s a real risk buyers should know about before relying on the app for time-sensitive gifts. There’s also a recurring worry about authenticity, with one user warning that some ‘handmade’ listings are actually resold mass-manufactured goods priced similarly to Amazon.

Interface Quirks Worth Knowing About

Smaller usability gripes add up too: one reviewer found their account and purchase history hard to locate, hidden behind a small circular icon rather than a proper tab, and noted that adding multiples of the same item to the cart sometimes displays incorrectly as a single item.

Who Should Actually Download This

Etsy’s app is worth having if you want access to independent sellers, custom gifts, and vintage or handmade goods you won’t find elsewhere, and you’re patient with imperfect search and variable shipping costs. If you need guaranteed fast delivery or flawless filtering, temper your expectations and vet individual sellers’ reviews closely before buying.

  • ✕Updates sometimes scramble saved folders

What Real Users Say

Connie D ★ 1/5

“There used to be a feature, where you could see all the shops you followed, and they would show you the most recent items for those shops in one area. They took that away? Why? To make it harder than it already is to find what you want to buy? Combined with the fact that the search is the worst…”

“I love Etsy, but the shipping is expensive, just bought a simple sticker and they charge over $4.00 for shipping. It was more than the sticker! But I can't find it anywhere else and I needed it. Why not just a stamp? It would fit in a basic envelope! I don't buy alot just because of the shipping costs. But…”

“Everytime this app is updated it creates a million problems I wish they would just leave it alone. Once again there's a bunch of issues after updating. My saved folders are all rearranged, items have disappeared from my sorted folders. I have hundreds of saved items in each folder and after scrolling through maybe 40, the items just keep repeating…”

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is Etsy: A Special Marketplace?

It's the official mobile shopping app for Etsy, connecting buyers with independent sellers offering handmade goods, vintage items, custom jewelry, art, and craft supplies. It includes browsing by category, search by image, order tracking, seller chat, and saved collections for organizing favorite finds. The app is built for shoppers seeking unique, one-of-a-kind items rather than mass-produced products.

2

Is the Etsy app free to use?

Yes, downloading and browsing the Etsy app is free for shoppers. You only pay for the items you purchase plus any shipping fees set by individual sellers. There's a separate Etsy Seller app with its own fee structure for those who want to list and sell items.

3

Is Etsy shipping expensive?

Shipping costs vary widely by seller since each shop sets its own rates, and several users have complained that shipping fees can exceed the price of small, lightweight items. One reviewer specifically noted paying over $4 in shipping for a sticker. It's worth checking shipping costs before checkout, especially for low-cost items.

4

Can I trust that items are actually handmade?

Not always. At least one experienced user warned that some sellers list mass-manufactured items as handmade, sometimes priced similarly to what you'd find on Amazon. It's a good idea to check seller reviews, read item descriptions carefully, and look at shop history before buying something described as handcrafted.

5

Does the Etsy app have reliable order tracking?

The app does include real-time order status updates and seller chat, which most users find useful. However, some reviewers reported inconsistent delivery experiences, including late, damaged, or missing orders that weren't always refunded. Reliability seems to depend heavily on the individual seller rather than the app itself.
